Bali also offers exciting natural challenges—one of which is white water rafting. The two most popular rafting locations in Bali are the Ayung River in Ubud and the Telaga Waja River in Karangasem. Although both offer exciting rafting experiences, they have very different characters.

For those of you who are confused about choosing between rafting in Ayung Ubud or Telaga Waja Karangasem, this article will thoroughly review the differences. Come on, listen until the end!

Difference between Rafting in Ayung Ubud and Telaga Waja Karangasem

1. Location and Access

Ayung River – Ubud

The Ayung River is located in the Ubud area, Gianyar. This is the most easily accessible rafting location from tourist centers such as Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, and Denpasar. The journey to the rafting location takes about 1 to 1.5 hours from the tourist area.

The road to the starting point for rafting usually passes through villages, rice fields, and cliffs. To reach the river, participants must descend a fairly long staircase—this could serve as a warm-up before the rafting begins.

Telaga Waja – Karangasem

Unlike Ayung, Telaga Waja is located in East Bali, precisely in Karangasem Regency. The travel time from Kuta or Seminyak to Telaga Waja can reach 2–2.5 hours. This location is indeed farther away, but it offers a quieter and more natural atmosphere.

Heading towards the Telaga Waja starting point is relatively easier because there is no need to go down a long staircase. Access to the river is more direct and suitable for those who do not want to tire themselves too much before rafting.

2. Level of Difficulty and Challenges

Ayung River

Ayung River has rapids with grades II to III, suitable for beginners or families who want to experience safe yet enjoyable white water rafting. The current is quite stable and not too strong, making it ideal for children and adults trying rafting for the first time.

The main challenge here is not the strength of the current, but rather the technique and navigation skills, especially when passing through several bends and river rocks.

Waja River

Telaga Waja River offering a more challenging rafting experience. With grades III to IV, this river has a stronger current, higher rapids, and sharper bends. Suitable for those seeking higher adrenaline and who have previously tried rafting.

One of the highlights of Telaga Waja is the rapids with an almost 4-meter slope—quite thrilling but safe when guided by an experienced instructor.

3. Route Length and Rafting Duration

Ayung River

The length of the rafting route on the Ayung River ranges from 10 to 11 kilometers. The travel time is about 2 hours, depending on the water current and the group's speed. With a not-too-extreme route, participants can enjoy the scenery while relaxing on a rubber boat.

Waja River

Telaga Waja has a rafting route spanning 14–16 kilometers. The travel time is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The route is longer and the terrain is more varied. This is the best choice for those who want to go rafting for a longer time with more extreme challenges.

4. Natural Beauty

Ayung River

One of the advantages of rafting on the Ayung River is the breathtaking scenery along the route. Waja River

Although there are no carvings on the cliffs like at Ayung, the still natural beauty and peaceful rural atmosphere make Telaga Waja feel more "wild" and exotic.

5. Security Level
